5. Oh, it's going to be good.

Sweet truth-tellers and seers, more from you and yours:

(From Nickole, poet, geek, and the love of one geek girl's life. nickolebrown.com)

Girl Geeks get lonely sometimes, but they rarely can identify that loneliness until they've been alone so long that they're sleeping in their bed with two dogs and a cat. They wake up in the morning wearing scarves and hoodies and tube socks, and mostly they don't fix their hair. . . they simply wet it down and go.

Girl Geeks love their hoodies. They have one favorite one, but any will usually do.

Girl Geeks wear bite guards to save what's left of their canines.

Girl Geeks like the pop and scratch of a record, the scratches on old hardwood, scratches on leather satchels that they carry everywhere full of books. In short, they appreciate imperfection and old age, even though they may or may not tell you how old they are.

Girl Geeks obsess on different words at different times. A particular vocabulary word may stick with her for days, and she will roll that word around in her mouth again and again and again until it becomes completely foreign. She likes this: making things strange. Making things new.

Girl Geeks are researchers. Wikipedia has changed their lives forever. Sometimes they open books at random and read from whatever is there in front of them.

Girl Geeks have been known to fall desperately, hopelessly in love with other Girl Geeks. Sometimes it works and sometimes not, but they never regret any of it, not even for a second. Sometimes that refusal to regret makes it work at a later time. Either way, they almost always call to say goodnight and remind each other to notice the moon.

Observations/thougts:

1) Yes...the “wet it down and go” hair preparation technique is a common practice among Girl Geeks. It has ancient origins, dating back to the dawn of human civilization and beyond. Our space ancestors were the “wet it down and go” types. Therefore, this is part of our collective Girl Geek memory/genetic history. The “wet it down and go” technique is a sacred ritual.

2) Hoodies.....I’m wearing one right now. A Geek Girl has at least six hoodies (possibly more)of various colors, one for every mood and occasion.

3) Bite guards....I too was once a bite guard wearer. I’ve since given it up. I still have one sharp canine tooth....however, the other canine is a nub.

4) Old age...old things that have life and history....... “the pop and scratch of a record, the scratches on old hardwood, scratches on leather satchels that they carry everywhere full of books”.....this is a good description of the heart and soul Girl Geek thought: imperfection and change are preferable to plastic lies.

5) Words......the love affair with words. I keep a dictionary next to my bed and before sleeping (or at various times throughout the day), I read it just for fun. I look over each word (strange words or familiar words), randomly choose one, read the definition, wonder about the origin (looking it up online if I need to)....and lovingly ponder the multi-layered meaning.

6) Wikipedia....pure information orgasmic overload. At least once a day I consult Wikipedia. It’s the supreme oracle of all oracles. And reading books at random...it's often the most pleasurable way to read a book. Forget linear narrative. Random Reading is the jumping off point. Also, last page to first.....

7) I fall in love with Girl Geeks every day.

A few additions:

1) Girl Geeks get excited when they “do” math....
2) Girl Geeks love the smell of fragrant laundry detergent exhaust emerging from a basement on a cold day
3) Girl Geeks love dormant snow covered volcanoes that could reawaken and explode.
4) Girl Geeks enjoy hearing the life stories of people she has just met while riding the bus across town.
5) Girl Geeks wander through the city, fascinated with the 19th century architecture....preferring the run down trashy (real) streets to the walled-off secure “fake” towering glass condo neighborhoods that are being built for the rich.

hell...i have been hopelessly in love with nick for 15 years now!

1) and we know how it truly sucks when our hair is going through one of those phases where it refuses to be "wetted down and go'ed." so maybe we knit a hat that is acceptable to us to wear when the hair rebels.

2) one can never have enough hoodies. i envy my co-worker's baby pink, halfway zip hoodies.

3) my cainines never were the problem...but TMJ certainly was.

4) "imperfection ans change are preferable to plastic lies"--that is exquisite.

5) maybe the longest love affair that i have ever been involved in.

6) just still so euphoric that i can once again get to it!

7) anxious to learn chinese better so that i can meet even more. i have only met the ones around that can also speak english. i am going to need a heart enlargement procedure.

1) my papa contributed to that excitement

2) oh my gosh...i indulged in that smell when i visited louisville in november. we don't have dryers here :-(

3) i dunno about that one...but i am mystified by everest.

4) i love hearing people's stories. for now, when i am on the train to and from work (1 hour away) when i cannot communicate enough with the people around me that moment, i make up stories about them in my head.

5)even after a year and a half, i still love wandering around this city. i am so fascinated by everything here. nick...we are so going to do some wandering together when you are here.
